Dr. Cathy Carey serves as a Professor of Economics at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). With over three decades dedicated to academia, she has held pivotal leadership roles, including Dean of the Romain College of Business at USI and Interim Dean of the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University (WKU).
Beginning her academic journey as an Assistant Professor of Economics at WKU in 1992, Dr. Carey advanced to the rank of Professor by 2008. She further distinguished herself by serving as Chair of the WKU Department of Economics for six years. Outside of academia, she has been a key contributor to state-wide economic initiatives, particularly through her involvement in Kentucky's Consensus Forecasting Group. A recognized scholar, she has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and delivered presentations to regional, statewide, and national organizations. Her leadership and contributions to the field were celebrated when she was named the 2021 Distinguished Economist by the Kentucky Economic Association (KEA).
In addition to her service as an administrator and academic, Carey has presented on economic issues to the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, Glasgow and Warren County Rotary Clubs, the board of the Kentucky Division of Financial Institutions and the Kentucky Economic Association. She was named a Dugas Family Professor by WKU in 2017, and is the recipient of multiple grants and awards for her leadership, research and expertise. She holds a bachelor's degree in business and economics, and both master's and doctoral degrees in economics, all from the University of Kentucky.
